This client wanted to update their bathroom with new colors and better lighting that both fit the new décor and gave good light. I went in to have a look at what they were hoping to achieve, and with some catalogue samples, was able to help them make their choices before having to go to the stores. Upon choosing what they liked best, I was able to direct them to which shopping venues would fit their needs best. Before, The Bar Light, gave good light, but the look was dated and plain. The new light fit the client’s taste and new décor, and while there are 2 fewer bulbs than the old light, the wattage capacity is higher, giving the same overall light at full capacity. For energy savings and level options, a dimmer switch was installed.
At the time, the same client was also doing a minor renovation/update to their kitchen; freshening up the colors and countertops, and updating their lighting, going from Florida ceiling to something a little more decorative and giving more light. At the same time, I suggested they would be happy having under cupboard lighting to give a better work light on their counters. The new lighting fits the décor of the kitchen better, and gives the option of maximum lighting, as well as dimmer light (when required) and energy savings, as they installed a dimmer switch. This option wasn’t available for their former lighting system. The lighting they chose for the cupboards, gives them the option of dimming down, or using at full brightness, giving good work light on the counter, or ambient, night-light type of light.
Again, at the same time, the client wanted to highlight their private gallery, but didn’t know how to go about it. Before, the only light source available is the chandelier. They were hoping for something that was low profile, bright, and able to function independently from the chandelier. I suggested that their electrician would be able to tap off of the chandelier outlet and run a separate switch off of the existing switch so that both the gallery lights and the chandelier could be operated independently. This was accomplished to their satisfaction. Before in the hallway, the only source of light, is the hall fixture. Not only did they want to highlight the paintings, but they required more light in the hall area. After, the hallway section of gallery lights were tapped off of the outlet from the hall light, allowing both the gallery to be lit and more light allowance in general to the hallway.
This project involved gutting the entire inside of the existing structure and repositioning some rooms. The existing garage was turned into the new kitchen, and a new garage and room underneath it were added. Using their custom home designer’s floor plans, I designed the new lighting layout, taking the client’s needs for maximum, yet efficient light, and switching for the layout of the various rooms. There were a number of 2-way switches required for this design.
As it’s difficult to get to the site, as a lighting designer (for safety reasons) to get before and after pictures, I was able to pick up a few during shots, and of course, several after shots of the finished product. The overall effect of the architecture and lighting is amazing!
